We love chickens, and one of the best things chickens do is lay eggs! When it comes to eggs, chickens produce them almost daily. We have a special machine that we put these eggs in called an incubator that keeps them warm. An incubator is like a warm and cozy house that keeps the eggs safe while they hatch into baby chicks. Temperature and humidity inside the incubator is crucial. They assist the eggs to hatch correctly. We are going to track the life of the chicken within the incubator and explore what goes on!
When we place the eggs into the incubator we must set the correct temperature and humidity. Doing so ensures that the eggs are getting the proper treatment. About three days into the 21-day process, embryos, or tiny baby chicks, develop inside the eggs. These embryos require warmth to develop, so we place the eggs inside an incubator for approximately 21 days.
During those 21 days, make sure you turn the eggs every few hours. Rotating the eggs aids the embryos’ growth uniformly all over. If they forget to turn them, the embryos can get stuck to one side of the eggshell. That will mean they cannot be hatched, which would be sad.”
